Monday August 17, 2020 Nauvoo, A Beautiful City, and Iowa!!!!

Beautiful Nauvoo!!!                                       I have to give you all a preface to this post.  This post is way late.  Why you ask??  Because I have had some serious opposition in getting it done. The internet here isn't good so it took about 2 frustrating  hours to upload all the pictures. Then I spent another hour putting the pictures in chronological order.  After that I put some serious thought into explaining the day.  Well, after the blog was about done and I was going to publish it, the whole thing erased and disappeared.  I about  died.  I was so frustrated so I quit.  I took a break.                                                                                              I was praying that night, and sort of complaining  about how frustrated I was to Heavenly Father.  Then the thought popped into my head, "Nauvoo was a time of serious trials for the saints".  I remembered everything I had seen and felt here.  The saints truly had more trials then any group of people I have ever heard about.  In that moment I realized that my "blog" trial wasn't so bad.   The next morning  Scotty helped me get better internet and I uploaded the pictures in about 45 minutes.  So here is the second version of what happened on August 17, 2020                                                                                                                                                                                         This morning Graham rode his bike while I went running.  I think we did more picture taking then we did running.  hahaha.  Nauvoo is so beautiful and the spirit here is so strong.  Graham and I had fun talking and laughing together.  Enjoy the pictures!!!                                                                                                   I fell.  There was a lift in the sidewalk and I tripped and fell.  When I realized that I was falling, I threw myself towards the grass so I wouldn't land on the cement.  As I hit the grass I slid like seriously 2 feet.  Some guy was in his car and saw the whole thing.  He pulled over and said that my fall was priceless.  hahahha. I was OK except for my awesome war wound.                                                            The corn here grows taller than us.  It's crazy!!!                                                                                 Graham and I got back and Scotty was hanging up the hammocks!!!  This campground is so great.  We rarely have room to hang up our hammocks.                                                      When I made our itinerary for this trip, we didn't chose any stops in Iowa.  So naturally, we weren't going to visit Iowa at all.  Well, when we drove into Nauvoo, I noticed that Iowa was right across the Mississippi river from us.  And I found a bridge that crossed the river to Iowa super close to us.  I got excited because that meant that  we could add Iowa to our "states visited" list!!!!!     Our first adventure today was to drive into Iowa and explore a bit. The bridge that we crossed into Iowa was a drawbridge.  So cool!!!!!  Then  we found Fort Madison which is an old train station and a museum.  We explored there most of the morning.                                                                                                                              A little Entertainer Action!!!!! This guy cracked me up.  I loved his overalls and his cigar hanging out of his mouth.  He was our tour guide for the day.  He taught us how the people used all these old machines.  He also showed us how women in the late 1800's and early 1900's cooked and sewed and cleaned.  Very interesting.      This is an old paper printer/typewriter.  So cool!!!                                                         Next to the museum is a pedestrian bridge to cross the train tracks and led you to the Mississippi River.  Trains were coming and going all day.  We had to stand on top of the bridge while a train went under us.                                        Welcome to the Mississippi River!!!!   One thing I was excited to do when I planned this trip, was to stand on the Mississippi river and spell it forwards and backwards.  I have been so excited to do this for like a year now.   hahahhahaha  Check that one off the bucket list.                                           This barge came by while we were admiring the Mississippi River.  We got to watch it go through the drawbridge that we drove over. The drawbridge twisted and moved to allow passage.   The kids thought that was the coolest thing of the day.                                                        The Nauvoo cemetery is located at the beginning of the town.  It has some really old head stones. We found some that were dated back to the really early 1800's. It was a good time to quiz Taj and Pepper about death and the resurrection.                                                                                  The village in Nauvoo is mostly closed.  We did find this shop open so we bought some delicious custard!!!   After we walked around the temple one more time, we headed home because we had two zoom calls with the sister missionaries here in Nauvoo.  All the historic buildings are closed.  So, to help us  take tours and hear the stories, the missionaries do virtual calls.  They walked through the buildings and told us the stories.  Tonight we toured Carthage Jail and Brigham Young's house.   Scotty made his famous french fries without starting a fire!!!!        After dinner we headed out to Old Nauvoo to explore the town.  The streets were empty because everything is closed.  Good old Rona.  We started off at the Smith Family Cemetery.  This is the burial site of Joseph Smith, Hyrum Smith, Emma Smith and other Smith family members.  The spirit was so strong and as a family we loved being so close to the prophet.

We stopped by Brigham Young's house to say "Hi" to the sisters that did our tour!!!
