Monday March 22, 2021 - Zions National Park - Angels Landing

Zions National Park
Angels Landing

Zions National Park has many hikes that are very family friendly.  Angels Landing is NOT one of them.  Scotty, Asher, Graham and I really wanted to hike up Angels Landing, but it is not a trail that Pepper and Taj could do.  My parents were so gracious and watched Pepper and Taj all day so the four of us could go and experience the thrill that Angels Landing has to offer.

First off, because of Covid, we couldn't get a shuttle ticket up to the trail head.  No worries!!! We just drove up as far as we could go, parked, then rode our bikes up!!  We rode 4 miles up to the trial head.  There was a fence at the start of the trial that we locked our bikes on.

The view riding up was incredible.

Angels Landing starts off of The Grotto stop up the park rode.

This sign says that the trail is 5.4 miles round trip.  It lied.  I Strava'd the hike, it was 7 miles round trip.  We ascended 5,907 feet.  It took us about 2 hours to hike the whole thing.  There were a lot of people there.  If no one was there, it could have taken us a lot less time.

And here we go. . . . . P.S.  There are a hand full of people who have died on this trial lately.

We traversed many switch backs all the way up.  People were so tired and resting along the whole trail.  Our family has done so many hikes lately that this wasn't hard for us.

Look at that view. From here we were only half way up.

More switch backs. . .

Once you reach Scout Lookout, you can start on the Angels Landing trail.  This is where it got really fun!!!!

See that chain??  Yup, that is how you not fall, by holding on to it.

The chain extends all the way up the mountain.  Some parts were steep, some not so much.  The chain was most needed in some areas and not needed in others. It's cool that they put the chain there.  It makes the whole hike possible.

Some parts were so steep that you had to use the chain to pull your whole body weight up the mountain.

This part was the most narrow.  You had steep cliffs on both sides of the chain.

That is the mountain that we climbed.

We got all the way to the top of this mountain.

There were a lot of people there so we had to take turns going up or down the chain.  If a group of people were going up while we were going down, we would just wait for them and vice versa.  That is the reason why it took so long.   There was always enough room for us but you don't want to make a wrong step on this trail.  We actually saw a couple families that took their kids that were around Pepper and Taj's ages.  Not a good idea.  We couldn't believe that someone would bring their young kids up that.  We noticed others that were not hikers and it showed.  That trial is an expert trail and really difficult.  Maybe the reason why people have died was because the trail was more difficult than their personal fitness level.  I don't know, but I have to say, " People, don't take your kids up Angels Landing."  It's too dangerous.

Here is the view from a point that is almost the top.

Scotty at the top!!

Graham at the top

Asher at the top.  I just wanted to sit down and eat my lunch :)

This is our, "We did it", picture.

Then we had to climb down all those switch backs to get down the mountain.

Asher did a back flip on the flattest part of the trail that we could find.  We were so high up!!

Deer were eating dinner when we got down.

This is a great picture to show you the first part of the trial that takes you up to the switch backs.

When we were done, we started talking to a couple that had locked their bikes next to ours.  We got their story, then they asked us about our travels.  With Asher and Graham as witnesses, they said, "Your parents (speaking of Scotty and I) are dope".  hahahahaha.  Third party attested and witnessed by Asher and Graham, We are dope!!!!  You'd better remember that boys!!!

We rode the four miles down to the truck and called it a day! What a thrilling experience.  Angels Landing is one or our favorite hikes!!
