We woke up at 5 am to leave Grand Junction, hoping to be out by 5:30 am. Our plan was to end up in Central City at our KOA around 10:30 am. The plan was good, but today took a nasty turn. In Scotty's words, "Today was fun, until it wasn't". He was so right when he said that. The drive from Grand Junction up the 70 is a gorgeous drive.

Pictures just don't do it justice. I never got bored while driving. In fact, I had to keep reminding myself to watch the road, not the mountains around me. When we passed by Veil I wanted to go skiing so bad. They actually have snow on their mountains. In June!!! Then we passed by a ski resort called Copper. The next town was Frisco.
I had the hardest time all day remembering that name..... Frisco. It's like a weird mix of Frisky and San Francisco. Anyways, Scotty found that in Frisco there is a killer Rec area. It has a skate park, a bmx park and a ton of other things. We decided to find a church to park the trailer at, then go over to the park.
The kids and I left Scotty in the trailer so he could work. Then we set off for a few hours of fun Fun FUN!!!!

Then it wasn't fun anymore. I was sitting in a central spot to where everyone was in the BMX part of the park. I looked up and saw a girl running towards me yelling, "Are you Sarah"? I responded, "Yes, What happened"? She then told me, "Your son crashed really hard. He looks really bad". That's when I followed her, running to where he was. I wasn't sure which son it was because Asher and Graham were in the same location. Then I saw Asher. I saw him sitting on the ground in a total daze. He looked very pail and his body was hunched over. He was holding his arm saying that his shoulder hurt and that he thought he broke his collar bone. His pupils were super huge and he was very confused. Oof, no, big OOF. I took a deep breath and reminded myself to stay calm. Sounded like a possible broken collar bone and a concussion to me. I knew that I needed to round up all the kids and their stuff because we were heading to the ER for this one. I knew that taking the other kids to the ER was a big no no, because of all this Covid crap. So, the best option was to drop them off at the trailer with Scotty, then take Asher to the ER. I called Scotty to give him a heads up and asked him to find the closest ER location. We arrived at the trailer and Asher was talking total gibberish. At this point I had gotten most of what happened: Asher was jumping off of this insane hip. His balance was off and he was leaning too far forward. He landed on his front tire and then took a trip to Indonesia - In other words, he totally flipped over his bars. He hit his head so hard. After locating the closest hospital, Asher was admitted. Then he barfed. Then he said the funniest things to the nurse. Then he kept telling me that he was so sorry. He looked horrible. I felt so bad. They did an X-Ray, then a CT scan for his head. Then an ultra sound for his organs. The whole time I was praying that it wouldn't be too bad. After like 5 hours they finally came back and said that his collar bone looked good. No break. The soft tissue around it seemed to be what was giving him all the pain. They also said that the CT scan came back clear. BUT.... they were supper worried about the concussion that he had. The fact that he was barfing and super nauseous made them nervous. They highly recommended that he stay the night at the hospital so they could watch him. They also wanted to give him an IV and anti-nausea meds. The doctor agreed with me that it would probably be OK for me to take Asher home for the night, but that he would be so much more comfortable at the hospital. We also agreed that he would recover faster if he stayed the night. So, here we are at the hospital right now. The IV helped Asher immediately. Within 10 minutes of being on it, his color came back in his face. Now he is laying on his bed, eating all the food he wants, calling the nurses when he has to go pee, holding the remote and watching anything he wants on the TV. This hospital is more like a spa!!! He has this huge room with this beautiful view. I'm so grateful that Asher will be OK. I'm grateful for the power of prayer in times of distress and worry. I'm sure Asher will recover fast and be back on his bike soon.
Our plans today were totally side swiped. I called our KOA and told them what happened and that we would be there tomorrow. They were very nice. People always say that on trips like these, you have to be flexible. A hospital stay wasn't in the plans but at least Asher will be OK :)

Praying he will be just fine by tomorrow. Sending hugs!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so sorry the fun ended. I'm sure this wasn't in your itinerary, especially so early in your trip. Asher and all of you are in our prayers that you will be safe, healthy, and have joy in being together on this adventure.
