Friday January 22, 2021 - Longhorn Cavern State Park TX

Taj enjoying our view during a break from school!!

Fridays are my favorite school days!!  We usually just have to wrap up the work from the week.  It's a less busy day and together we get to see the progress from the week.  The kids all finished their weeks work and then we prepared for a fun cavern tour!!

Longhorn Caverns State Park was the reason for this stop.  This cavern will be our fifth cave tour.  It's been interesting to learn the history of all the caves.  This cave was formed from a sink hole. Water entered the sink hole and carved our the cave.  The cave was used by Indians that mined the dirt out of it to make arrow heads.  During WWII people used the cave to mine guano for gun powder.  It was also used for a romantic date by lovers who carved their names into the walls.  Many cave spelunkers have had adventures here.  We had a guided tour that lasted about an hour and a half.  The cave was cool but not our favorite.  Definitely worth the stop but we all agreed that as to date, Cathedral Caverns in Alabama was our favorite cavern.

See the chicken nugget bat???  So small and cute.  We got so close to the bats that we could see the skin over their cute ears.

This cave was prepared to be a fallout shelter but never used as one.

When the tour was done, we climbed up the observation tour to see the beautiful landscape.  There was a castle in the distance that we saw as well.

  1. Wow! As you visit all of these places are you gaining a sense of wonder and grandeur at the Creation? People didn't see that sinkhole and think "Good for nothing, danger, stay away, useless." Nope, they made use of it. From diamonds to arrowheads, I don't think there is much randomness. Nor is there randomness in the intelligence the Lord blessed us with.
